Cherries in a Cloud

6 egg whites

3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

3/4 cup chopped walnuts

2 cups white granulated sugar

2 cups crushed Saltine crackers (crush with rolling pin)

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

8-oz. container Cool Whip

21-oz. can Cherry Pie Filling with extra cherries

In a large mixing bowl, beat the egg whites and cream of tartar until soft peaks form. Add the sugar a little at a time, beating well after each addition until the mixture is thick. Fold in the walnuts, crushed crackers, and vanilla. Pour mixture into a greased 13x9-inch cake pan. Bake in 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. When ready to serve, spread with Cool Whip and then cold cherry pie filling. Keep refrigerated.
