Brownies from Jane Kester

This recipe was given to me by Jane Kester, September 18, 2004.  It is one of her favorite recipes.  I first made it on September 27, 2004.  This was Jane's mother's recipe (Jessie Handforth) from a 1940s western cookbook.

1/2 cup butter
2 (1-oz.) squares of unsweetened chocolate
1 cup white granulated sugar
2 eggs, well beaten
pinch of salt (don't pinch it too hard)
1 cup walnuts, chopped
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup white flour, sifted

In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter and chocolate, stirring often to avoid scorching until smooth.  Remove from heat.  In a large mixing bowl, use a spoon to combine the sugar and eggs.  Stir in the chocolate mixture and then the salt, vanilla, and flour.  Spread into a greased 8x8-inch baking pan.  Bake in a 350 degree oven for 25 minutes.  Cut into squares while warm.
